The Best Young Entreprenuer in Donegal, and who knows – Ireland!

The search is on for Donegal’s Best Young Entrepreneur. Organised by the new Local Enterprise Office the competition has attracted almost fifty young people in the county to take part in the Donegal phase of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur. The winning local businesses will receive investment of up to €50,000, and the chance to represent Donegal at the regional and national finals where winners are eligible for extra investment of up to €50,000 determined according to business prospects and investment needs. Sixteen people aged 30 and under from throughout the county have been selected as Donegal finalists and are attending an intensive Business Boot Camp that entails training, mentoring, marketing and other supports that will also be available at various stages of the competition. The competition will be judged under three distinct categories - best new idea, best start-up business and best established business with new add-on. The first week in September will see the final of the Donegal competition with the winner of each category being announced before going forward to the regional final and ultimately national final with one business person being crowned Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur in early December. The aim of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur is to encourage and support a culture of entrepreneurship among young people, to promote entrepreneurship as a career choice, and to encourage the establishment and development of new innovative businesses by our young entrepreneurs. This is hugely important for job-creation as two thirds of all new jobs are generated by businesses in the first five years of existence – more start-ups and a thriving entrepreneurial culture will lead to more jobs being created. Featured are entrepreneurs from all over the county who have made it to the final. Launching the Business Boot Camp Micheal Tunney, Head of Local Enterprise, said: "It is fantastic to see the entrepreneurial spirit of young Donegal people and this intiative supports them so that they can realise their ambitions and their business success can help make recovery local in every part of the county”.

Letterkenny Businesses Make Hay while the Sun Shines

Independent retailers in Letterkenny are once again displaying their exchange rate in bright pink letters as the Sterling/Euro exchange rate moves in favour of Letterkenny and they are all set to reap the rewards just in time for the twelfth fortnight to attract the many Northern Ireland customers who visit during this time. Gerard Grant, Letterkenny Chamber President said “There is so much value to be had at the minute across Letterkenny and if a customer is using sterling they will get even more for their money. On the border the exchange rate fluctuates all the time but we are ready to take full advantage of the exchange rate at this time. By all accounts it looks like it will remain like this for a while so that’s good news for Letterkenny. Over the 12th fortnight we generally see many visitors and holiday makers from Northern Ireland and we hope that the exchange rate gives them an opportunity to shop and spend time in Letterkenny.” Letterkenny Chamber under it’s Shop LK brand has produced a poster for participating shops which very simply tells customers that the shop offers a rate of £1 = €1.25 in vibrant pink. These have been distributed around independent retailers who will proudly display them on their shop windows. Gerard continues “This is Letterkenny’s time to make hay while the sun shines and we want to welcome back all our Northern customers to re-discover what Letterkenny has to offer. This town has a great shopping reputation and we are keen to keep our loyal customers and to attract back those who may not have been here for a while and the Summer is the best time to experience all that Letterkenny has to offer.” Letterkenny offers a great shopping experience. There’s the traditional Main Street, the shopping centres, the retail parks and lots more in between and after a few hours shopping there’s lots of places to relax for a coffee, a meal or for family entertainment. This exchange rate campaign will last well into the Summer so keep out an eye for the bright pink signs.
