In conversation with Joanne Sweeney-Burke, Finalist of The Apprentice 2011

Letterkenny Chamber is delighted to bring Joanne Sweeney Burke as our guest for one of the first events of 2012. Joanne who once worked in Letterkenny Chamber will join Chamber members for what we promise will be an uplifting and positive networking event. The event, that will be held in Gallaghers Hotel on February 16th at 7pm, is entitled “In Conservation with Joanne Sweeney Burke, Apprentice Finalist 2011” and is an opportunity to hear the behind the scenes version of The Apprentice and to find out what difference it has made to Joanne and her business, Media Box. Toni Forrester of Letterkenny Chamber says she’s looking forward to the event, “We all followed Joanne during the series, through her ups and downs but I for one was interested in what really happens on this type of reality show, how it is filmed, did they get on, and I’d like to hear Joanne’s opinion on how some of the tasks were edited. Joanne is well known to some of us and this event also gives us an opportunity to catch up with Joanne, hear about her plans for the future and indeed what big challenge she will take on this year.” Former journalist, Chamber of Commerce CEO, PR Lecturer, one-time election candidate, Media Box owner, The Apprentice 2011 finalist, married mum of 2, wife of 1, media and political junkie, a radio-head, she loves her voice and telling a story - Joanne Sweeney-Burke takes on a new challenge every year. The 34-year old started her business just as the recession hit Ireland – October 2008. However, as an eternal optimist and a deeply focused individual, she brought her vision from her kitchen table to reality and has grown Media Box consistently year on year. Media Box has now expanded into Galway and has also expanded its Letterkenny office. Joanne says of herself: “I am a person who is conscious of brand reputation, who loves a challenge, motivated to succeed but who is inherently shy. I live my life by the mantra ‘the only person that can stop you achieving your goals is yourself. Feel the fear and do it anyway.’” Joanne’s story is one that has been told in print, radio, online and this summer on TV. However, it is her natural ability to overcome challenges with such fearless ambition that inspires her audiences. The conversation on the evening will be lead by Lisa Birkett, well known from The Red Room on Highland Radio and there will be plenty of audience interaction. So if you’ve ever thought about applying for a TV Show or have a burning question you’d love to ask come along on 16th February to find out more. New Year Wishes from Letterkenny Chamber

The first day back from work is always difficult especially for us who weren't open over the holidays but here in the Chamber we remain in a positive mood. Before Christmas, ShopLK vouchers were selling very well and they are being spent as we can see by the amounts being redeemed just today. Last year until November 2011 we had sold €260k worth and we are well on the way to reaching the €1m mark. This Christmas we saw many more people stay local to shop as the exchange rates have once again moved in our favour but most importantly consumers this Christmas recognised the value and convenience that is available right here in Letterkenny. We have no doubt that 2012 will again be a challenge for businesses and individuals however we still believe that the Donegal and Letterkenny business community will remain resolute and positive and face up to those things they can control and we in turn will endeavour to lobby on behalf of and support our members in whatever way we can.

No Case for VAT Increase in Budget 2012

Chambers Ireland has today (28/10/11) said that there is no case for increasing VAT in Budget 2012. The call was made as the Retail Sales Index for September 2011 show that the volume of retail sales declined by 0.8% when compared with August 2011 and by 3.9% when compared with September 2010. Speaking this morning Seán Murphy, Chambers Ireland Deputy Chief Executive said, “Consumer spending is still weak. The Government must support the domestic economy in the period to Christmas by providing assurances as earlier as possible that VAT will not be increased.” “This issue is particularly important for the border region where increases in the VAT rate had very detrimental impacts on trade—and wider VAT receipts—in the border region as consumer spending migrated North, we cannot afford a repeat of this in Christmas 2011” Murphy concluded.

Small Businesses are crucial to Ireland’s overall Competitiveness and Growth

Address by Minister for Small Business, John Perry T.D. to Letterkenny Chamber Business Lunch

Temporary Partial Credit Guarantee Scheme - key component in suite of initiatives aimed at ensuring flow of credit Micro-Finance Start-up Fund - will provide small loans up to €25,000 to businesses with up to 10 employees It is a pleasure for me to be here today and I would like to thank Letterkenny Chamber for inviting me and giving me the opportunity to address you all on my key priorities for the coming months. The Programme for Government, the Jobs Initiative and the fact that I was appointed Minister for Small Business all confirm the commitment of this Government to small businesses. We are acutely aware of the importance of the small business sector and its potential for generating employment. Our speedy delivery of the Jobs Initiative by May should give confidence to businesses that their contribution is acknowledged and supported. As the newly appointed Minister for Small Business I want to be the voice of small business to Government to reflect concerns and bring forward proposals to assist businesses. My challenge now, and indeed the challenge of the new Government, is to prioritise where we will place efforts to best effect over the coming months - so that we do achieve change and make a difference.

Social and digital media are becoming of much greater importance to all types of businesses. The aims of Donegal Digital Skillnet are to:  Improve skills, knowledge and expertise  Encourage business owners to use technology for busness benefit  Give local businesses the skills and tolls to promote their businesses in non-traditional ways.  Increase the capacity of businesses located in Donegal to widen their market geographically. Through the Skillnet Letterkenny Chamber will deliver training from mid August to December. In house training can also be delivered specifically tailored to suit a businesses needs. Welcoming the Skillnet funding, Patrick McGinley , Chamber President said "Over the last year members have been increasingly asking for seminars and training on Social Media. Many of our members had started to see others using it and had started to use these marketing channels but were unsure of how to make it work effectively for their business. The programmes that we will be delivering at a subsidised cost to businesses will ensure that business owners and their key staff have the tools and knowledge to embrace this new technology. Inishowen Motors - partnership with Nissan Ireland

The Letterkenny and Malin-based car dealers Inishowen Motors have announced a new partnership with Nissan Ireland. “Nissan is one of the top 5 brands in the marketplace,” says Seamus McLaughlin, “with Nissan volumes up almost 30% on last year. There is clearly a huge demand for Nissan from consumers but there has been no Nissan dealer in north east Donegal for some time. We wanted to fill the gap, and believe we can provide a better service to buyers in this region now as a result.” Seamus says the partnership will also benefit Nissan, because of the success story that is Inishowen Motors. “When we became dealers for Kia, they had just 2% of the market nationwide but in Donegal, we brought that to 9% with the sales from our Malin and Letterkenny showrooms,” he adds. Inishowen Motors is a family-run business with a strong emphasis on customer service and support. “We have operated from Malin in Inishowen for 2 generations and opened our Letterkenny showroom almost ten years ago, and moved to Drumkeen in 2009. We are now planning to develop another showroom at Drumkeen to meet the demand for our vehicles and parts services.” “We are predicting major public interest in Nissan cars and commercial vehicles as a result of our new partnership with them. For example, the Qashqai is one of the top 8 best selling models in Ireland for 2011, the Juke was crowned Irish Car of the Year for 2011, and the Leaf was recently crowned World Car of the Year Commenting on the new partnership, Gerard A. O’Toole, Executive Chairman of Nissan Ireland says they are “delighted to recruit such an experienced dealership to the Nissan franchise. Inishowen Motors are a high calibre dealership and we look forward to many successful years of business ahead” Nissan Ireland is responsible for distributing the full range of Nissan new cars, commercial vehicles / vans and forklifts within the Republic of Ireland. Established in 1977, Nissan has been at the forefront of the Irish motor industry ever since. This is achieved by a potent combination of aggressive sales and marketing strategies coupled with an extremely strong customer service philosophy, says Mr O’Toole. Seamus McLaughlin is also keen to point out that Inishowen Motors will be dong more than offering Nissan car and commercial vehicle sales. “We will also offer parts, service and warranty to existing Nissan owners in this region.” Contact Emmet Eves on 9134567 for information on Nissan parts, service and warranty, or book a service on www.inishowenmotors.ie .

Nvolve Creates 15 new jobs in Donegal

Nvolve, a Donegal software company, whose business is the development of training software to meet the needs of compliancy in the food industry, has announced plans to recruit a number of additional positions over the next 12 - 18 months. This latest recruitment drive by Nvolve to attract up to 15 new employees coincides with the company's immediate plans to enter the UK market with a joint venture with UK based Plc Staffline Group. The jobs will be in marketing, sales and customer service. The new Joint Venture will trade under the name Group Learner Ltd and will be primarily focused on the Food Industry in Ireland and the UK. Nvolve Ltd was set up in 2005 and is based at Colab at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology. The company has developed a range of innovative training solutions and in recent years has focused on the Food Industry in particular. Nvolve’s training platform has been developed to meet the specific compliance needs of the Food industry in Ireland and the UK and includes; Food Safety, Health and Safety, Literacy Assessments and Inductions. The main back bone of the Nvolve offering is a product called Volume Trainer™ which combines courseware such as Food Safety with keypad training technology, similar to what is used in “Ask the Audience” on the game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” (www.nvolve.net) Nvolve CEO Barry Harper explains, “What we do is quite simple yet very effective, we help Food Companies meet their regulatory training requirements at about half the price and in a much more efficient way. Ultimately we save our clients time and money. For example, recently one of our customers had to ensure all their staff had a Food Safety qualification because they were awarded a large order from Marks and Spencer. They had only a week or two to be 100% compliant. We helped them do this in a few days and at an affordable cost. Commenting the Joint Venture and the scaling up in the UK Barry continues, “This Joint Venture with Staffline enables us to rapidly expand into the UK market with an excellent company which has a quality reputation in training and recruitment. The key benefit of our solution is that we have not only enabled our customers to prove their compliance with very little hassle, we have done so much more efficiently and effectively, saving all our clients well over 50% on their training budgets. ” The Nvolve platform is a paperless system where all results are stored electronically so that when an auditor asks “is this person compliant?” Nvolve’s clients can not only show attendance at a training session but they can say ““Mary did Food Safety on the 1st February 2011, she had keypad number 5, she was asked 30 questions, and she got 90%”. About Staffline Group Plc Staffline Group Plc are one of the largest temporary staffing companies in the UK with over 200 offices nationwide and over 20,000 staff working at client locations. Andy Hogarth, CEO of Staffline Group Plc is excited about the new venture, “We have been working with the Nvolve team now for over a year and have used the training platform to very good effect for our own workforce. We identified that many other organisations had the same issue as us - training large volumes of people in a very short space of time. We’re delighted to be part of this Joint Venture. With Nvolve’s technology expertise and our existing base of customers I believe that in a short space of time Group Learner Ltd will become one of the leading training companies in the UK Food Industry” Nvolve will recruit people over the next 2 years, with over 7 of them being employed before the end of 2011.

Shop LK Vouchers sales soar

48% increase in sales

Letterkenny Chamber are delighted to announce a 48% increase in sales of Shop LK vouchers over the two months leading up to Christmas. In the two months from 1st November to 31st December €160,240 worth of Shop LK vouchers were sold making this a record since the initiative started. Patrick McGinley commenting on these extraordinary sales figures commented “Last year total sales from November 09 to October 10 stood at a record high of €207,000. However this Christmas season has exceeded our expectations and this amazing increase of 48% is a real shot in the arm for Letterkenny. This is money that can only be spent here in the town and it contributes to supporting these outlets and most importantly supporting local jobs.” He continued “The Shop LK initiative offers local consumers an opportunity to support their local town in a really tangible way. We have had increasing sales year on year and the outlets involved in the initiative get real benefits. Many other towns have now developed local shopping initiatives but Letterkenny Chamber started Shop LK well before the recession and over the years it has caught the imagination of the general public.“ Letterkenny provides something unique not found in neighbouring towns and cities - a main street with many independent traders, a local town feel with high street names, a clean well kept town, ample and reasonably priced parking close to the shopping areas and not least helpful and friendly staff who will go that extra mile to give customers exactly what they need. The “Shop LK – Love Shopping Letterkenny” brand helps to underpin all that is good about shopping in Letterkenny. The Chamber makes no money from the sale or redemption of vouchers so every cent brought in through Shop LK is invested back into the promotion of the brand throughout the year. Through the Shop LK initiative Letterkenny Chamber has always advocated the principles of keeping it local. The brand and the vouchers are a way of celebrating all that is good in Letterkenny. Consumers now have a great deal of choice right here in Letterkenny with excellent value every day across a range of products. Shopping in Letterkenny is hassle free with lots of cheap and convenient parking, lots of places to eat and relax and less money to spend on petrol. All in all the shopping experience here in Letterkenny is friendly, convenient and hassle free. Commenting on the increase Toni Forrester Chamber Chief Executive said “ We knew sales were increasing this year but we were cautious until we saw the final figure. The Chamber office was selling vouchers every day in the run up to Christmas with staff just about keeping up with the demand. Vouchers were bought by businesses as tax efficient bonuses, by organisations as prizes and by the general public who have really taken this initiative to their hearts. Over the last two years we have noticed that the range of people buying the vouchers has widened as people like the idea of a voucher and many comment on the idea that they are supporting the local community. Letterkenny Chamber could not run this highly successful initiative without the support of FAS community employment programme through which the Chamber is staffed. It is the frontline staff in the Chamber that provide the much needed resources throughout the year but most especially at these busy periods and the support of FAS is very much appreciated. “ The Chamber President finished by saying “with increases in the region of 48% we are optimistic that sales will increase throughout the year and we are well on our way to selling the first million in vouchers. This is all great news for the 85 Shop LK members and for Letterkenny as a town”.

I view this role as a challenging but also an excellent opportunity to work on behalf of Letterkenny businesses to ensure that we all get a better deal for Letterkenny and the North West.” Patrick continued, “Over the last number of years we have all had to make some very tough decisions just to remain in business. The economic crisis in the country has affected us intensely here in the North West and in the recent budget there was nothing to stimulate the economy and no measures to lessen the cost of doing business. We now know the next four years will bring more of the same and we will need to harness as much entrepreneurial spirit as possible to remain in business. As President of Letterkenny Chamber I will commit to keeping pressure on our TDs and local government to create the best environment for business here in the North West. We will continue to urge the national Government at every opportunity to support our small businesses that are, after all, the lifeblood of our economy. “ Patrick shares the same sense of pride for Letterkenny as his fellow Chamber members. In his address he pointed to the “increased sense of community within the business community in Letterkenny. During my year as President I will commit to working with all Chamber members in a practical and supportive role and with the Chamber staff to drive the membership numbers. The Chamber has been working for it’s members for over 45 years and the business community has benefitted and improved as a result of the Chamber’s efforts. Over the next year we intend to increase our membership substantially and continue to attract businesses who want to have their voice heard.” Patrick concluded by saying “We will all face more challenges in 2011 and I will endeavour to work hard during my year of office to deliver for our new and existing members.” Apart from a new President the Chamber has a new Council. The Chamber Council is made up of 16 members, from a wide variety of business sectors, who meet on a monthly basis and who are responsible for steering the policies and projects of the Chamber. Four new Chamber Council members were elected for the 2010/2011 period. Chamber Council 2010/2011: President – Patrick McGinley,(McGinley Sofas); Paul Byrne (Radisson Blu); Gerard Mc McCormick (Magees Pharmacy); Joe Mangan (Mangan Tours); Eamonn Stevenson (Eamonn Stevenson Financial Services Ltd.); Brian Mc McCormick (Brian McCormick Sports); Bernard Dillon (Honorary Member); Hugh Downey (Sharp Design); Paddy Delap (Clarkes Newsagents); Lisa Loughrey (John F Loughrey & Associates).; Seamus Browne (Browne Printers); Enda Mulligan (AIB); Gerard Grant (Pramerica); John O’Connell, (UHC); Tracy Bonnar (Silver Tassie); Kenneth Bradley (Oifig Thart Smart Office Solutions)

Chamber Business Awards

Letterkenny Business People honoured by their peers.

The Letterkenny business community celebrated the achievements of two business men at the Letterkenny Chamber Annual Dinner. Patrick Bonnar was entered into the Hall of Fame and Kevin Grimes of The Four Lanterns was named Business Person of the Year at an event that celebrates the best of business in Letterkenny. Both award winners who were nominated by Chamber members and surrounded by their families and business colleagues accepted the awards from Letterkenny Chamber President, Paul Byrne. Hall of Fame winner Patrick Bonnar was nominated for his contribution to Letterkenny. Consistent high quality, hard work and taking a few risks can be used to describe Patrick Bonnar and the business he founded. Over many years Bonnar Engineering Ltd. has added so much to the physical fabric of Letterkenny. Specialising in structural steel the company has completed projects all over Ireland starting off with Killybegs fish factories and in recent years many of the notable buildings in Letterkenny. Patrick attributes his success to sheer hard work, building good relationships and always having an eye for an opportunity. Patrick now officially retired from the business has passed his work ethic on to his two sons Anthony and Patrick who now run Bonner Engineering. He continues to work in his partnership with Tommy McLaughlin with whom he has developed Riverside Office & Retail close to the factory on Blaney Road. Over the years Patrick has created jobs directly in his own business and even more indirectly through the many buildings with which he has been involved. Business Person of the Year Kevin Grimes received his award on behalf of his brothers and sisters, the Directors of the 4 Lanterns group. Celebrating 40 years in business the 4 Lanterns is a recognised brand throughout the County. Employing 170 people the company has many long standing members of staff and they put their success down to hard work, quality of service and product and consistency. In the past 6 months the 4 Lanterns has expanded their concept into 4 Lanterns Subs, opening two outlets in Letterkenny and the new Ballybofey 4 Lanterns with Subs is due to open soon. Kevin Grimes on accepting the award paid tribute to his father Frank “the consultant” who has been instrumental in developing the subs concept. The Grimes family are firmly rooted in Letterkenny, they have created employment and give much back through supporting local charities. Paul Byrne, in this one of his last official duties as President, said on presenting the awards “Letterkenny Chamber on behalf of its members is delighted to honour these two business people and their companies. Letterkenny has benefitted hugely from the contribution that these businesses have made to the local economy. They are both excellent examples for us all in business, inspiring confidence, showing vision and both so committed to the development of Letterkenny.”

Chamber makes submission to Town Council

Letterkenny Chamber urges Council to adopt half hour free parking

Letterkenny Chamber, it's members and many Main Street traders have delivered submissions to Letterkenny Town Council in response the the consultation on Parking Places By-Laws. These by-laws went out for consultation tyowards the end of the summer giving the Chamber and traders time to consider their implications. The Chamber has made reference to a number of key issues but has cncentrated on two main areas namely: The adoption of 30 minutes free on-street parking period and Enforcement. Commenting on the submission Toni Forrester, CEO said "The Main Street area has many service type businesses that require quick and easy access. If customers were given 30 minutes free such as they can get in The Courtyard car park the chance of getting a space will increase, traffic flow should be improved and it will encourage people to use the newly enhanced Main Street as we see it emerge in December. In addition we realise that this will need to be enforced and that spaces will need to be maximised. Parking over the time limit will attract penalities and will deter persistent offenders. Many customers who visit neighbouring towns and cities are used to strict parking and using car parks. We believe that these two measures to gether will encourage more turnover of on- street spaces and more use of the many car parks." The deadline for representations regarding the parking Places By-Laws was Monday 27th September Go to the articles section of the website for a copy of the Chamber submission.

Letterkenny Chamber Hosts Business Lunch

Minister for Tourism, Culture & Sport visits Letterkenny

Letterkenny Chamber recently welcomed Minister Mary Hanafin to Donegal to hear directly from the Minister on her Department’s priorities and plans for the North West. The Minister who heads up Tourism, Culture and Sport took time to meet with the many tourism providers, businesses and people involved in the arts at the Chamber quarterly business lunch. She accepted a copy of the cultural compass from the Council Arts Office and helped in promoting the Donegal Live visit to Glasgow. The Minister began her speech by outlining the importance of tourism, one of the biggest indigenous industries in Ireland . She said “Tourism is found in every little corner of Ireland” and she applauded Ireland and the Donegal people for their natural welcome. She highlighted the positive messages that went out from Donegal in terms of good value as well as the successful festivals run across the county throughout the year. Donegal has had success this year in attracting the domestic market and the challenge now is to put Donegal on the UK and international radar once again. Paul Byrne, President of the chamber in his address said “this year in particular all the key stakeholders from public and private sector have taken on the challenge of operating in a very difficult economic environment and are working together to position Donegal internationally. The County Council and Failte Ireland are implementing strategic tourism projects such as Sliabh League, Malin Head and the Sail West project that is already is underway. These projects are highly significant in terms of the development of the Donegal Tourism Product and we hope that they will help increase visitor numbers and leave a lasting legacy”. The event also allowed the Chamber President to highlight the importance of the cultural sector to the county. He informed the Minister that Cultural providers attracted 380,000 visitors to the county and the Earagail Arts Festival alone contributed €3m to the local economy. Both these sectors play vital roles in the Donegal economy. Paul finished by saying “We used this event to promote Donegal on a wider stage and to ensure that those at then highest levels of Government were aware of the excellent work going on in Donegal and more importantly that the Minister saw what Donegal had to offer. This event showed the Minister how proud we all are of this beautiful county and we assured her that Donegal will continue to offer good value and a very warm welcome to visitors. “

Property Price register may stimulate the property market

Letterkenny Chamber has welcomed the announcement of a new property price database by Minister Ahern commenting “.As the purchase of a property is likely to be the single biggest transaction in a consumer's lifetime it is essential that an accurate picture of market prices is readily available. This transparency is necessary to help restore confidence in a market that has been hit hard during the recession. Local evidence of sales completed at auction and by private treaty would suggest that property prices have reached a bottom and stabilised and we hope that the implementation of this measure by the Government will help increase activity in the market.” Seán Murphy, Chambers Ireland Deputy Chief Executive that have been calling for this register for over two years said, "This is a positive step forward, until now a lack of market information has deterred buyers from taking part in the housing market.” “Timely market data is vital if we are to encourage potential buyers to enter the property market. These buyers are prerequisites to enable other sellers to trade up and thereby stimulate property market activity. New house purchases and house moves are a crucial stimulus to the hard pressed building sector and to small construction firms specialising in repair, maintenance and improvement in particular.” “Furthermore, current market price information will be vital in enabling these sectors to come through the current downturn and generate new taxes for the Exchequer. We look forward to legislation enabling the publication of full price data being enacted without delay and also trust that there will be no duplication of efforts by other arms of State on this issue, “he concluded.

UNITEDHEALTH GROUP “CONFIDENT” FOLLOWING VISIT BY CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Expansion of Current Facility an Option Management at UnitedHealth Group in Letterkenny have expressed confidence about their future following a high profile visit by Senior Executives led by Chief Financial Officer Dave Wichmann last week. In a week that saw US President Barack Obama come to Ireland, the confidence of Letterkenny’s second-largest employer is extremely high. Mr. Wichmann, who is also President of UnitedHealth Group Operations, was joined by six colleagues who were reviewing operations at the Letterkenny site. During his address at the official opening of their new building, Mr. Wichmann said,“the facility in Letterkenny is a high performing site for our company and the quality of work and tenure of the staff presents significant opportunities to grow and develop the site in terms of high-end jobs.” Ranked 22 on the US Fortune 500 companies list, UnitedHealth Group is a company of 87,000 employees with 63 offices worldwide. It is a significant operation with a turnover of almost $101 billion annually. While the multi-national sector in Ireland continues to buck the recession, Mr. Wichmann has made the strongest indication yet that they are looking at expanding their operations beyond Co. Donegal. “Ireland is one of the best markets to be in. Notwithstanding the value of doing business here from a corporate tax point of view and reducing running costs, there are three other main pillars that have allowed us to expand from 30 employees in 1999 to 473 today with projections to reach 550 as part of current plans. “They are: the abundance of human resources, quality – Letterkenny is one of the highest performing sites of our 63 locations worldwide - and the capacity of the people here to execute business objectives. They understand business and they in their own daily work are growing our business.” UnitedHealth Group is now Letterkenny’s second largest employer and its rapid growth in the past decade has been attributed to the over-arching ‘edge’ and insatiable appetite for success among the staff that have worked there from the very beginning. With low turnover and strong tenure Dave Wichmann says this environment has allowed for growth into “highly-skilled functions” in Letterkenny. Those positions that the Government refer to as the Smart Economy. The company also celebrated the grand opening of its new 17,000-square-foot building at Business Park Road in Letterkenny with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Site Director Padraig Monaghan led the US delegation into the community which included visits to Woodlands National School where UnitedHealth Group Executives got the chance to “:go back to school”. Woodlands National School is part of the Junior Achievement Programme. They also met Letterkenny Institute of Techonology to discuss partnering on a programme for preparing graduates for positions within UnitedHealth Group. And at the end of a busy two days, the delegation were treated to an Irish spectacle of food, traditional music and Irish dancing at Glenveagh Castle. Padraig Monaghan described the meetings in the community as “a rare opportunity to showcase the depth of the Irish spirit in our classrooms, our third level institutions and in our community. Our community involvement is a very strong part of our business ethos and I would like to pay tribute to Mr. Kevin Caldwell at Woodlands N.S., Paul Hannigan at Letterkenny Institute of Technology and the management team at Glenveagh Castle for demonstrating Donegal hospiticalty and talent at its best.” UnitedHealth Group’s Letterkenny site currently employs more than 450 people across Claims Operations, Transactions, Quality, Finance, Human resources and IT Functions. Redressing the Balance

Sterling Rates

News Release Date: 7th July 2010 Redressing the balance Businesses in Donegal grasp the opportunity Finally there seems to be a chink of light at the end of the tunnel as sterling strengthens against the Euro and things are starting to swing in favour of Donegal businesses. For the first time in over two years it gives a chance for businesses here to bring back more local shoppers who had gone to the north and also a chance to attract northern shoppers to Donegal once again. As we are all too aware the exchange rate started to go against Donegal businesses at the same time as the banking crisis and the recession were hitting so there was little to be optimistic about and it has been a challenging time for everyone in business. Previous to this sterling business made up a high proportion of many businesses revenue. That all but disappeared in recent times and was made worse by local shoppers going North. Welcoming this shift Letterkenny Chamber president Paul Byrne said “The Euro /Sterling exchange rate is hovering around €1.21 with commentators predicting further movement in our favour this year. It was not long ago that we were looking at a rate close to parity making the trading environment very tough. Over the last 15 months business in Letterkenny across the sectors have worked hard to offer reduce prices offering exceptional value while prices have been rising in the UK. With better value right on the doorstep it is clearly not worth travelling north to shop and we are seeing a distinct slow down in shoppers going North. The recently announced increase in the UK Vat rate in January will also act as an attraction to both local shoppers and Northern shoppers coming south. For businesses here in Letterkenny it’s now time to redress the balance , to grab the opportunity and take advantage of the favourable exchange rates. Increasingly there are less and less reasons to cross the border for shopping. Prices are attractive and there are bargains to take advantage of. Letterkenny also offers a unique and varied shopping experience with it’s mix of strong independent traders working alongside High Street chains. Businesses in retail, leisure, hospitality and across the sectors are doing their best to offer value and choice to all customers that no matter what currency they are paying in.” He continues “As a border town we will always live with the swings and roundabouts of the exchange rate. For the time being it is to the advantage of Donegal. Our message to all customers is that Letterkenny is very much open for business, welcomes back all its local customers from Letterkenny and across the County and embraces customers from the sterling zone customers who will once again return to Letterkenny.” Ends. Increase in UK VAT Rate Good News For Donegal Business

Irish Businesses Gain

Yesterday’s announcement of a 2.5% increase in the UK VAT Rate from 17.5% to 20% will help retailers in Donegal attract more cross border customers. This is the second increase in VAT in the UK this year following the increase from 15% to 17.5% in January. As a result of this and inflation, prices in Northern Ireland are increasing significantly. The Euro / Sterling exchange rate has also been moving in favour of Donegal retailers from near parity to a current value of 1 Pound Stg equalling around 1.20 Euro. So today’s move will help Donegal retailers who have cut prices significantly over the last 18 months in an effort to retain customers. Chamber President Paul Byrne said “We hope that today’s tax increases by the UK Government will further stem the flow of people crossing the border to do their shopping and most importantly help to protect jobs in Donegal. It is imperative that there is no subsequent increase in VAT by the Irish Government in its December budget. We are calling on the Government to demonstrate its support for business and employment in Donegal by freezing the VAT rate at its current level. Today’s development will help business in Donegal to regain its competitive edge and hopefully result in more Northern shoppers in Donegal.”

Chamber Network Calls for Abolition of JLC’s and REA’s

Supporting Competitiveness

The Chamber Network in Ireland has today called on Government to urgently address is the issue of the complex labour and employment market especially in the context of the agreement around Joint Labour Committees (JLCs) and Registered Employment Agreements (REAs). Seán Murphy, Chambers Ireland Deputy Chief Executive said, “If Ireland is serious about maintaining competitiveness and enabling businesses to survive and remain globally competitive, the Government must give serious consideration to abolishing JLCs and REAs. These types of agreements predate the setting up of Ireland’s National Minimum Wage in the 1990s and are now an anachronism given the minimum salary protection it offers.” “JLCs and REAs contribute greatly to the unwieldy nature of our wage infrastructure and impede the implementation of changes needed by enterprise in order to preserve jobs and sustain a labour market clearing rate. The 17 active JLCs currently in operation coupled with numerous REAs only serve to put greater pressure on businesses than should be the case.” “Businesses continue to change their operating models in order to survive. If Government is serious about giving these businesses real supports, while continuing to focus on the restoration of Ireland’s competitiveness, these contracts must be abolished,” Murphy concluded.

Anticipated UK VAT Rate Increase Good News for Irish Business

Retailers and Irish Government to Gain

Chambers Ireland has today (21/06/10) said that tomorrow’s Emergency Budget in the UK could bring further relief to many Irish businesses, particularly those in the Border region. The anticipated increase in the UK rate of VAT by 1.5-2.5% from 17.5% to 19-20%, coupled with the recent depreciation of the euro against sterling, provides further grounds for optimism regarding Ireland’s efforts to reduce cost differentials with respect to one of its biggest and most easily accessed markets. Ian Talbot, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive said, “In recent months we have seen levels of retail spending begin to stabilise. In April alone, the volume of retail sales increased by 6% compared to April 2009, the first year-on-year increase since March 2008. A 2% VAT increase in the UK would deliver an additional STGŁ10 billion to the UK Exchequer and represents a huge opportunity for the UK Government as it struggles to meets its financial outlays.” “Any anticipated increase in the UK rate of VAT will further stimulate spending in the Republic, generate revenue streams for the Exchequer, enhance footfall in Border towns and further reduce pressure on retail jobs in Ireland. Such an outcome would be very welcome at this time,” Talbot concluded.
